Monsoon Windshield Glass Coating in Mumbai: Does Rain Repellent Really Help?

By Royal Royce Team

Quick answer: Yes, a glass coating helps in Mumbai’s monsoon, mostly at night and at speed. It makes rain bead up and roll off the windscreen, so wipers clear it faster and headlight glare smears less. A University of Michigan study found treated glass improved drivers’ visual acuity by about 34%. It only works on properly cleaned glass, wears fastest under the wipers, and needs refreshing.

It’s 9 p.m. in July. You’re on the Western Express Highway, the rain is coming down in sheets, and the wipers are on full speed. Between strokes the windscreen turns into a sheet of water, and every oncoming headlight becomes a long streak of glare. You lean forward without noticing you’re doing it.

That’s the moment a glass coating is designed for. Here’s how it works, what the evidence says, what it can’t do, and whether it’s worth it for your car.

Why Mumbai’s monsoon is so hard on visibility

Santacruz averages about 2,500 mm of rain a year, almost all of it between June and September, according to IMD normals summarised on Wikipedia. That’s not steady drizzle. It’s heavy bursts, often at night, on roads that are already busy and poorly lit in places.

Three things make it worse for drivers:

  • Volume of water. In a heavy burst, wipers can’t keep up. There’s a fraction of a second after each stroke where you’re looking through a film of water.

  • Glare. Water on glass scatters light. Oncoming headlights, streetlights and brake lights smear into streaks, especially on a windscreen that already has an oily film.

  • Slick roads. Rain on Mumbai’s roads mixes with oil and grime. The Free Press Journal has reported chain-reaction crashes on a rain-slick Western Express Highway. Seeing the car ahead brake a moment sooner matters.

A glass coating only addresses the first two. It won’t stop a car aquaplaning. But anything that buys you a clearer view through the monsoon is worth understanding.

What a windshield glass coating actually does

Normal glass is “hydrophilic”: water spreads across it in a thin sheet. That sheet distorts what you see through it and holds dirt.

A glass coating is a thin, transparent layer bonded to the glass that makes the surface “hydrophobic”. Water can’t spread on it, so it pulls into tight round beads. Beads roll off easily, and at highway speed much of the rain blows off the windscreen before the wipers even reach it. What’s left, the wipers clear in one clean stroke instead of smearing.

The coating also makes the glass slicker, so road grime, insects and bird droppings don’t stick as hard, and the oily film that causes night glare builds up more slowly.

What the research says

The best-known study is old but still useful. In 1997 the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute tested hydrophobic windshield coating in simulated conditions (Sayer et al., UMTRI-97-31). With the coating:

  • Drivers’ visual acuity improved by almost 34%

  • Response time to a target dropped by more than one second

  • Night-time performance with the coating came close to daytime performance without it

The researchers were careful to add that they tested only freshly applied coatings, and that the benefit would fade with wear unless the coating was reapplied. Keep that in mind; it’s the most honest summary of glass coating there is.

Convenient if you’re coating the car anyway

The windscreen always wears first, because the wipers scrub it on every rainy drive. Side windows, mirrors and the rear glass usually keep their water-beading much longer. If a shop promises you years of beading on the windscreen, ask how they define it.

Is glass coating worth it in Mumbai?

We’d say yes for some drivers and “not really” for others.

Worth it if you:

  • Drive at night during the monsoon, regularly

  • Commute on the Western or Eastern Express Highway, the Sea Link or the Coastal Road, where speeds are high enough for rain to blow off

  • Drive to Pune or Nashik through the ghats in the rains, where visibility drops suddenly

  • Find night glare hard; many drivers notice it more as they get older

Less useful if you:

  • Mostly drive short, slow trips in daylight

  • Rarely drive during heavy rain

  • Don’t want to keep up the refresh every few months

And one more honest point. A glass coating can’t make up for worn wiper blades, a pitted windscreen, or an oily film on the inside of the glass. Fix those first; they often make a bigger difference than the coating.

What glass coating can’t fix

  • Fog on the inside. The coating goes on the outside. Interior fogging in the monsoon comes from humid air condensing on cold glass, and it’s solved with the AC and clean inside glass. Our guide to a foggy windshield explains the fix; it was written for Delhi winters but works the same in Mumbai rain.

  • Pitted or sandblasted glass. Tiny chips and pits scatter light no matter what’s on top. That’s a windscreen replacement question.

  • Wiper streaks from old blades. Hardened rubber smears the glass whether it’s coated or not.

  • Deep water spots. Mineral spots etched into glass need polishing out before coating, or the coating seals them in. Our guide to white water spots on your car covers how they form.

How a glass coating is applied properly

The result depends almost entirely on preparation, the same as with paint coating.

  1. Wash the glass to remove loose dirt.

  2. Decontaminate. A glass cleaner or clay removes bonded grime, tar and traffic film.

  3. Remove water spots and the oily film. A glass polish takes off mineral deposits and the old film that wipers have smeared into the glass. Skip this and the coating bonds to the film, not the glass, and wears off in weeks.

  4. Degrease. A final wipe with an alcohol-based panel wipe leaves bare, clean glass.

  5. Apply the coating in small sections and buff off the excess, as the product directs.

  6. Let it cure. Most products need several hours without rain or wipers. Follow the product’s instructions, and plan the job for a dry day, which in Mumbai means doing it before the monsoon or in a break.

The best time to do it is late May or early June, before the rains set in, alongside a wiper blade change.

What goes wrong

  • Wiper chatter. On some coated glass, wipers judder instead of gliding, especially with old or hard blades or a patchy application. Fresh blades and an even coat usually fix it.

  • Haze or smears. Usually from excess product not buffed off or applied in direct sun. A good installer catches this before handing the car back.

  • Short life. Almost always a prep problem: coating applied over film or spots.

Looking after a coated windscreen

  • Wash with pH-neutral shampoo. Strong household glass cleaners and dish soap wear the coating faster.

  • Change wiper blades before every monsoon. Mumbai’s summer heat hardens the rubber.

  • Use proper washer fluid. Plain tap water leaves mineral marks.

  • Clean the wiper rubber with a damp cloth every couple of weeks in the rains.

  • Refresh the coating when water stops beading on the lower half of the windscreen, where the wipers work hardest.

A full monsoon visibility check

A glass coating is one part of seeing clearly in the rains. Before June, check all of these:

  • ☐ Wiper blades replaced and washer jets aimed correctly

  • ☐ Washer reservoir filled with washer fluid, not plain water

  • ☐ Windscreen cleaned inside and out, water spots and film removed

  • ☐ Glass coating applied or refreshed, if you’ve chosen to use one

  • ☐ Headlights clear, not yellowed; see our yellow headlight restoration guide

  • ☐ Demister and AC working, and the cabin air filter checked

  • ☐ Door and windscreen seals checked for leaks, which also cause monsoon mould

  • ☐ Underbody protected for months of standing water; see our anti-rust coating guide

Glass coating vs paint coating: which first?

They do different jobs. Glass coating is about seeing; paint coating is about protecting the bodywork from salt air, grime and droppings. If your budget allows only one before the monsoon and you drive a lot at night, glass coating gives you the more immediate safety benefit. If you’re already planning a ceramic coating for the paint, adding the glass at the same time is efficient, because the prep overlaps. Our PPF vs ceramic coating guide covers the paint side city by city.

Wiper blades for a coated windscreen

A coating and a good wiper blade work together. A bad blade undoes most of the coating’s benefit.

  • Replace blades every year before the monsoon. Mumbai’s April and May heat hardens the rubber, and a hard edge chatters and streaks on any glass, coated or not.

  • Check the whole length. Lift each blade and run a finger along the edge. Nicks, splits or a rounded edge mean it’s time.

  • Match the size. Driver and passenger blades are often different lengths. Check the owner’s manual or the old blade.

  • Look for even contact. A blade that leaves a band of water in the middle of the sweep usually has a bent frame or worn springs, not a coating problem.

  • Keep them clean. Grit on the blade edge drags across the glass and slowly wears the coating. Wipe the rubber with a damp cloth every couple of weeks in the rains.

If wipers start to judder on freshly coated glass, try new blades first. It fixes most chatter.

Should you coat the side windows and mirrors too?

We’d say yes, if you’re already having the windscreen done. The extra work is small and the payoff is real in Mumbai rain:

  • Side mirrors stay clearer, which matters when you’re changing lanes on a wet highway at night.

  • Front side windows shed rain, so you can see the mirror through them.

  • The rear windscreen clears faster if your car has no rear wiper.

Since wipers don’t touch these surfaces, the coating usually lasts noticeably longer there than on the windscreen. Coat the headlight lenses only if the product says it’s safe for polycarbonate; many glass coatings are made for glass alone.

Frequently asked questions

Does glass coating really help in heavy rain?

Yes. Water beads and rolls off, wipers clear it more cleanly and glare is reduced. A University of Michigan study found about 34% better visual acuity on freshly treated glass.

How long does a windshield glass coating last?

Spray-on repellents last a few weeks. Professional glass coatings last several months on the windscreen, where wipers wear them, and longer on side windows and mirrors.

Is glass coating worth it in Mumbai?

For drivers who drive at night or on expressways in the monsoon, yes. For short daytime city trips, the benefit is smaller.

When should I get glass coating done in Mumbai?

In late May or early June, before the monsoon sets in, so the coating cures on a dry day. Change the wiper blades at the same time.

Can glass coating cause wiper chatter?

Sometimes, usually with old or hard blades or an uneven application. Fresh blades and a properly buffed coating usually fix it.

Does glass coating stop the windscreen fogging up inside?

No. The coating is on the outside. Inside fogging is fixed with the AC on, fresh air and clean inside glass.

Can I apply rain repellent myself?

Yes, spray-on products are easy to apply. Clean and degrease the glass first, or the product bonds to the film and wears off quickly.

Can glass coating remove water spots?

No. Water spots and old film have to be polished off before coating, or the coating seals them in.

Does glass coating work at low speeds?

It still makes wiping cleaner and reduces glare, but water only blows off on its own at higher speeds.

Can glass coating be done at the same time as ceramic coating?

Yes, and it’s efficient because the preparation overlaps. Royal Royce offers both, with pick-and-drop for studio coating jobs.
