PPF vs Ceramic Coating vs Teflon: Which One Suits Your City’s Weather?

By Royal Royce Team

Quick answer: Choose PPF if you drive highways daily, own a premium car or hate stone chips; it physically absorbs impacts. Choose ceramic coating if your main enemies are dust, rain, bird droppings and sun; it makes paint easy to clean for 2 to 5 years at a fraction of the price. Skip dealer “teflon” for protection. Many owners combine front PPF with ceramic everywhere else.

That’s the short version. The longer one depends on where you park and drive, because a Gurgaon expressway commute and a Bandra basement face different threats. Here’s how the three compare, and which one we’d pick in each of our four cities.

Which is better, PPF or ceramic coating?

Neither wins outright, because they solve different problems.

Picture two cars on the Yamuna Expressway. A truck ahead kicks up gravel. On the coated car, a pebble hits the bonnet and leaves a white chip down to the primer; the coating was a few microns thick and had nothing to absorb the impact with. On the PPF car the same pebble leaves a faint dent in the film, and on a hot afternoon it fades. That’s the case for PPF in one moment.

Now picture both cars after a week parked outdoors in Dwarka in November. Both are grey with smog dust. The coated car rinses clean in ten minutes because nothing sticks to it. The PPF car, without a coating on top, needs more work. That’s the case for ceramic.

So the honest answer to “which is better” is a question back to you: are chips and scrapes your main problem, or grime and fading?

When PPF is the better buy

  • You drive highways or expressways several times a week

  • The car costs ₹20 lakh or more and you care about original paint at resale

  • You park in tight spots where bumper corners and door edges get scuffed

  • It’s a matte or special finish that can’t easily be polished

When ceramic coating is the better buy

  • Most of your driving is city traffic at low speed

  • You park outdoors and fight dust, bird droppings, tree sap or rain spots

  • You want gloss and easy washing without spending a lakh

  • The car is a few years old and you’re getting the paint corrected anyway

The case against teflon coating

Most dealerships will offer a “teflon coating” at delivery for roughly ₹10,000. We’d skip it.

Teflon is a brand name for PTFE, a plastic that only bonds when it’s baked at very high temperatures (PTFE melts around 327°C, per its chemical profile). Nobody bakes a car at that heat. So what you’re usually getting is a synthetic polish or wax, often applied with a rotary buffer that can add swirl marks to brand-new paint.

Wax isn’t bad. It just doesn’t last. Carnauba wax can wash away in four to five weeks of Indian summer heat, and synthetic sealants manage four to six months, according to Motomotar’s 2026 guide. For a quick glow before a wedding or before you sell, a professional car shine treatment does the same job honestly. For protection, put that ₹10,000 toward a real coating.

PPF vs ceramic coating, city by city

We work across Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad, and each city attacks paint differently. Here’s the pick we’d make for a typical daily-driven car in each.

City

Main threat to paint

Our pick

Delhi NCR

Winter smog film, construction dust, expressway gravel

Ceramic for everyday grime; add front PPF if you use the expressways daily

Mumbai

Salt air, monsoon rain, tight-parking scuffs

Ceramic plus PPF on bumper corners and door edges; protect the underbody separately

Bangalore

Frequent showers, hard-water spots, pothole gravel

Ceramic first; front PPF for regular highway trips

Hyderabad

45°C summers, strong UV, construction dust

Ceramic, and only premium TPU if you choose PPF

Delhi NCR: smog makes ceramic coating earn its keep

In smog season, cars collect a gritty, slightly acidic film every day. Most paint damage in Delhi isn’t from the smog itself. It comes from scrubbing that film off with a dry cloth. A coating lets the film rinse away without scrubbing. If your commute includes the Dwarka or Yamuna Expressway, add PPF to the bonnet, bumper and mirrors. More in our Delhi smog car care guide, or ask our Delhi NCR team.

Mumbai: protect the paint and the parts paint doesn’t cover

Salt-laden air and months of humidity corrode metal first, and neither PPF nor ceramic covers the underbody. Budget for undercarriage cleaning and treatment before you spend on the paint (here’s why). For the paint, a coating handles monsoon water beautifully, and small PPF pieces on bumper corners and door cups stop the scuffs that tight society parking causes. Our Mumbai team can look at both.

Bangalore: rain and water spots favour ceramic

Showers come often and dry fast, and water from borewells or tankers leaves mineral rings when it evaporates on paint. A hydrophobic coating sheds water before it dries. If you drive out on NICE Road or to Mysuru often, front PPF is worth adding for gravel. Talk to our Bangalore team.

Hyderabad: heat decides the film quality

Summer highs of 45°C cook cheap films. PVC and low-grade hybrid PPF can yellow and crack within a couple of seasons. If you want PPF in Hyderabad, buy TPU and check the warranty card. For most daily drivers, a ceramic coating plus covered or shaded parking is the better spend. Our Hyderabad team can help you choose.

Can you put ceramic coating over PPF?

Yes, and it’s a common combination. The film takes impacts; the coating on top makes the film glossy, hydrophobic and easier to clean. Apply the coating after the film has settled, and use a coating the film maker approves.

The budget version: PPF on the bonnet, front bumper, fenders and mirrors (the full front end, ₹35,000 to ₹80,000 in Spinny’s survey), ceramic on everything else. You get most of the chip protection for a fraction of a full-body wrap.

What both need before they go on

The step people skip decides the result: paint correction. Film and coating are both clear, so they lock in whatever swirl marks and scratches already sit in the clear coat. Get the paint corrected first, then protect it.

At Royal Royce, PPF is installed at a studio because film needs a dust-free bay, and pick-and-drop is available for studio jobs in all four of our cities. Ceramic coating prep starts with decontamination and machine polishing, and advanced coatings cure in controlled conditions. If you’re unsure where your paint stands, our polishing vs waxing vs ceramic explainer shows what each step fixes.

What each option costs over five years

The sticker price misleads, because the three products last very different lengths of time. Here’s a rough five-year view for a sedan, using the 2026 market ranges from Spinny, Motomotar and VahanBazaar.

Option

Upfront

Upkeep over 5 years

Rough 5-year total

What you have at year 5

Dealer “teflon”, redone twice a year

About ₹10,000

Nine more applications

About ₹1 lakh

Gloss for a few weeks after each visit; no lasting protection

Pro ceramic coating

₹22,000 to ₹32,000

Annual checks at ₹5,000 to ₹8,000, plus a refresh around year 4

₹45,000 to ₹70,000

Easy-clean, glossy paint; chips and scrapes not prevented

Front PPF + ceramic

₹55,000 to ₹85,000

Coating checks as above

₹75,000 to ₹1.1 lakh

Chip-free front end, coated rest

Full-body PPF

₹80,000 to ₹1.5 lakh+

Washing and an occasional film inspection

₹85,000 to ₹1.6 lakh

Original paint under film on every panel

These totals are illustrative, not quotes, but the shape holds. Teflon looks cheapest on the day and ends up costing as much as a good coating while protecting far less. Ceramic coating gives the best value per rupee for most city cars. Full-body PPF only makes financial sense when the paint is worth protecting at that price: a premium car, a special finish, or an owner who’ll keep the car a long time.

How to spot a fake coating or a cheap film

Both markets have shortcuts. A few checks catch most of them.

For ceramic coating:

  • Time. A proper job takes 1.5 to 3 days. A same-day “ceramic” in four to six hours is almost always a spray sealant.

  • Correction. Ask what polishing steps are included. “We’ll just clean it and coat it” means swirls get sealed in.

  • Product name. A genuine coating has a brand, a product name and a batch you can check. “Imported 10H coating” with no name is a red flag.

  • Cure instructions. You should be told not to wash the car for 7 to 14 days. If nobody mentions curing, nothing serious was applied.

For PPF:

  • Material. Insist on TPU. PVC and cheap hybrid films are thinner, can yellow in Delhi and Hyderabad heat, and don’t self-heal.

  • Warranty card. A real film comes with a warranty card or digital registration in your name and car number.

  • Edges. Look closely at panel edges and around badges. Lifting edges, bubbles that don’t settle within a few days, or knife marks on the paint are signs of rushed work.

  • Where it’s fitted. Film should go on in a clean, enclosed studio. That’s why Royal Royce installs PPF only at a studio, with pick-and-drop available, even though our cleaning services come to your doorstep.

Our verdict

For most city cars in India, ceramic coating is the better first buy. It costs a fifth of full PPF and fixes the problem you actually face every week: grime that’s hard to wash off. Add front-end PPF if you drive highways often or the car is premium. Skip teflon.

Whatever you choose, book the consultation before the money goes down. A good detailer will look at your paint, ask where you park and drive, and sometimes tell you to spend less than you planned. That conversation is the quickest way to find out whether the studio is selling you protection or just a package.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, PPF or ceramic coating?

PPF is better against stone chips and scrapes; ceramic coating is better value against dust, rain and fading. For most city cars, ceramic first, then front PPF if you drive highways often.

Is PPF worth it in India?

For cars above about ₹20 lakh, frequent highway use or matte finishes, yes. For a budget city car, full-body PPF rarely pays back; front-end PPF often does.

Is teflon coating better than ceramic coating?

No. Dealer teflon is usually a wax or polish that lasts weeks to months. Ceramic coating lasts 2 to 5 years with proper care.

Can I apply ceramic coating over PPF?

Yes. Coating over film adds gloss and makes it easier to clean. Use a coating approved for the film and apply it after the film settles.

Does PPF turn yellow?

Cheap PVC and some hybrid films can yellow in strong sun and heat. Good TPU films with UV inhibitors resist yellowing, which matters in Delhi and Hyderabad summers.

How long does PPF last compared with ceramic coating?

Good TPU film lasts several years; ceramic coating lasts 2 to 5 years depending on grade and care. Both last longer with pH-neutral washing.

Does ceramic coating protect against scratches?

It resists light wash marring but not keys, gravel or deep scrapes. Only PPF absorbs physical impacts.

Which is better for Mumbai’s salt air, PPF or ceramic?

Both protect paint, but salt mostly attacks the underbody, which neither covers. Treat the underbody separately, then choose ceramic or PPF for the paint.

What about graphene coating?

Graphene coatings are ceramic coatings with graphene added and cost more. They’re claimed to handle heat and water spots better; whether that’s worth paying for depends on your car and parking.

Can PPF be installed at home?

We don’t recommend it. Dust trapped under film shows as bumps. Royal Royce installs PPF only at a studio and offers pick-and-drop, so you don’t have to drive the car there.
