Foggy Windshield in Delhi Winters: Why Glass Stays Hazy and How to Fix It

By Royal Royce Team

Quick answer: To clear a foggy windshield fast, switch the AC on, set airflow to the windscreen, choose fresh air (not recirculation) and turn the temperature up. The AC removes moisture while warm air heats the glass. If the glass still looks hazy once it’s clear, the cause is an oily film on the inside, which needs cleaning with a glass cleaner and two microfibre towels.

It’s 7 a.m. in January. You start the car in a Noida parking lot, pull out, and within a minute the windscreen has turned white from the inside. You wipe it with your hand. Now it’s white with streaks. Outside, the fog on the expressway is thick enough that you can barely see the car ahead.

This is the most dangerous kind of minor car problem. Fog-related crashes killed 5,740 people in India between 2014 and 2021, about 14 a day during the roughly 60-day fog season in December and January, according to MoRTH data reported by The Tribune. A clear windshield won’t fix the fog outside, but a fogged-up or hazy one makes it far worse.

Here’s why it happens and how to stop it.

Why your windshield fogs up inside

Fog on the inside of the glass is condensation. Your breath, wet shoes and damp jackets put moisture into the cabin air. When that warm, humid air touches glass that’s colder than its dew point, the moisture turns into tiny droplets. In a Delhi winter, with night temperatures in single digits, the glass is very cold for the first few minutes of a drive.

Three things make it worse:

  • Recirculation mode. It keeps the same humid air, full of your breath, cycling inside the car.

  • More people. Four passengers put out four times the moisture.

  • A dirty windscreen. Droplets cling to the oily film on dirty glass much more easily than to clean glass. Which is why a car with a clean windscreen fogs less, and clears faster.

How to clear a foggy windshield in under a minute

  1. Turn the AC on. Yes, in winter. The AC compressor dries the air, and dry air is what clears fog. Heat alone is slow.

  2. Select the windscreen airflow setting (the icon with the curved glass and wavy arrows). Many cars switch the AC on automatically in this mode.

  3. Switch to fresh air. Turn recirculation off so drier outside air replaces the humid cabin air.

  4. Turn the temperature up. Warm air warms the glass above the dew point, and warmer air holds more moisture.

  5. Crack a window for a few seconds if it’s still slow. It swaps humid air out faster.

  6. Rear demister on. Most cars have heating elements in the rear glass; use them.

What not to do: wipe it with your hand or a tissue. Skin oil and tissue lint smear the glass, and the streaks scatter oncoming headlights at night, which is exactly when you need to see.

If fog forms on the outside of the glass instead, usually when you’ve had the AC very cold and step into humid air, use the wipers and turn the AC temperature slightly warmer.

Why the glass stays hazy even after the fog clears

This is the part most Delhi drivers live with without knowing why. The fog goes, but the windscreen still has a greasy, milky haze, especially when you look into low sun or oncoming headlights.

That haze is a film on the inside of the glass, and it builds from several sources, as SlashGear explains:

  • Off-gassing from the dashboard. When the cabin heats up in the sun, plastics and upholstery release chemical vapours that settle on the cold glass. This is why new cars get hazy glass so fast.

  • Smoke. Cigarette smoke leaves a sticky, yellowish residue.

  • A dirty cabin air filter, which lets dust and particles through to settle on the glass.

In Delhi, add a fourth: winter smog. The fine soot and oily particles that come in through door seals and vents settle on the glass too. Our Delhi smog car care guide covers what that same fallout does to your paint.

How to clean the inside of your windshield without streaks

You need an ammonia-free glass cleaner (or a 1:1 mix of white vinegar and water), isopropyl alcohol for stubborn film, and two clean microfibre towels. Not paper towels or newspaper; they leave lint and can make haze worse.

  1. Clean the outside first. That way you’ll know which streaks are left on the inside.

  2. Spray the cleaner onto the towel, not the glass. Spraying the glass gets cleaner on the dashboard.

  3. Wipe in overlapping strokes, first side to side, then top to bottom. Do half the windscreen at a time, sitting in the passenger seat for the far side.

  4. For stubborn film, do a second pass with a 50:50 mix of isopropyl alcohol and water.

  5. Buff dry immediately with the second, dry microfibre.

  6. Check against light. Look through the glass towards a bright window or headlights; any remaining smear will show.

Avoid ammonia-based household glass cleaners. They can damage window tint and dry out dashboard plastics.

Keep the haze from coming back

  • Use a sunshade when parked so the dashboard doesn’t bake and off-gas as much

  • Wipe the dashboard with a silicone-free cleaner rather than a shiny dressing, which adds more vapour to the glass

  • Get the cabin air filter checked at every service and replaced as your owner’s manual says

  • Don’t smoke in the car

  • Wipe the inside of the glass with a dry microfibre once a week

Don’t forget your headlights

In fog, the windscreen is only half of seeing. Yellowed, cloudy headlight lenses throw weak, scattered light that fog bounces right back at you. If your headlights have turned yellow, restoration usually costs far less than new units, as we explain in yellow headlight restoration. Use low beam and fog lamps in fog; high beam reflects off the fog and makes visibility worse.

When to have the glass professionally cleaned

If you’ve tried and the haze keeps coming back, or there’s a smoker’s film you can’t shift, a professional interior clean deals with the source as well as the glass: dashboard, vents, roof liner and all the surfaces that off-gas or hold residue. Glass and mirror cleaning is part of our interior deep cleaning service, and you can see what a full Delhi interior clean involves in our car interior cleaning guide for Delhi.

For the outside, our doorstep car exterior cleaning in Delhi includes glass, and removes the traffic film that smears when the wipers run.

Defog settings by car type

The principle is the same in every car, but the buttons differ.

Manual AC (most hatchbacks and many sedans). Turn the mode knob to the windscreen symbol, press the AC button so its light comes on, slide the air-source lever to fresh air (the arrow coming in from outside, not the curved arrow inside a car), set the fan to two or three and the temperature knob to warm. Once the glass clears, move some airflow to the feet so you stay warm without fogging again.

Automatic climate control (most newer SUVs and premium cars). Press the front-demist button. In most cars it switches the AC on, selects fresh air, raises the fan and directs everything to the windscreen in one press. Leave it on until the glass is clear, then press AUTO. If the car keeps fogging in AUTO, check that recirculation isn’t stuck on.

Electric and hybrid cars. Demisting uses battery power, so some cars limit it in eco modes. Pre-condition the cabin from the app while the car is still charging if you can.

Why new cars fog more than old ones

Many owners notice their new car’s windscreen hazes up far faster than their old one did. Two reasons. New dashboard and trim plastics off-gas most strongly in their first year, especially in a car that bakes in the sun, so the oily film builds quickly. And modern cabins are well sealed, which keeps humid air in. The fix is the same: clean the inside of the glass more often during the first year, use a sunshade, and run on fresh air rather than recirculation.

Wipers and washer fluid for the fog season

The outside of the windscreen matters too. Fog leaves a fine mist on the glass, and dirty wiper blades smear it into an arc of haze right in your line of sight.

  • Clean the blades. Wipe the rubber edge with a damp cloth until it no longer leaves black marks.

  • Replace hardened blades. Delhi summers bake wiper rubber. If blades chatter, skip or leave streaks after cleaning, replace them before December.

  • Use proper washer fluid. Plain water leaves mineral marks and doesn’t cut traffic film. A washer concentrate cleans much better.

  • Clean the outer glass at every fuel stop during the fog season, especially after highway drives behind trucks.

Driving in dense fog: what helps you see and be seen

A clean, clear windscreen is the start. These habits do the rest:

  • Low beam, never high beam. High beam reflects off fog droplets straight back at you and makes visibility worse.

  • Fog lamps on, front and rear if your car has them. They’re mounted low to light the road beneath the fog.

  • Slow down and increase following distance. In dense fog, you may see only a few car lengths ahead, so your speed should let you stop within that distance.

  • Follow the lane markings, not the car ahead. Tailgating a vehicle’s tail-lights in fog is how pile-ups happen on expressways.

  • Keep the windows slightly open at junctions so you can hear traffic you can’t see.

  • If you stop, get fully off the road and switch on the hazard lights. Don’t stop on the carriageway.

Delhi’s fog season overlaps with the worst smog weeks, so the same windscreen also collects soot. That’s why the weekly clean below matters more in January than at any other time of year.

One last habit worth adopting: before a fog-season drive, sit in the car for a minute with the demister running while you put on your seatbelt and set your route. Starting off with clear glass is far safer than trying to fix it at 40 km/h on a white expressway.

A five-minute fog-season routine

Once a week from December to February:

  • Wipe the inside of the windscreen with glass cleaner and two microfibres

  • Clean the outside glass and wiper blades with a damp cloth

  • Check the headlights are clear and both work

  • Shake out wet floor mats so the cabin dries

If you park outside, a well-fitted cover also keeps frost and dew off the glass overnight. Read whether a car cover is right for Delhi before you buy one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I quickly clear a foggy windshield?

Turn the AC on, select windscreen airflow, switch to fresh air and raise the temperature. The AC dries the air while the heat warms the glass. It usually clears in under a minute.

Should I use hot or cold air to defog my windshield?

Warm air with the AC on. The AC removes moisture and the warmth raises the glass temperature. Cold air alone is slow, and heat without AC can fog more at first.

Why does my windshield fog up inside in winter?

Warm, humid air from your breath and clothes condenses on the cold glass. Recirculation mode, more passengers and a dirty windscreen make it worse.

Why is my windshield hazy even after cleaning?

An oily film on the inside from dashboard off-gassing, smoke, smog or a dirty cabin filter. Ordinary wiping smears it; it needs a proper glass cleaner and a second dry towel.

What is the best way to clean the inside of a windshield?

Spray ammonia-free glass cleaner onto a microfibre, wipe in overlapping strokes, follow with diluted isopropyl alcohol for stubborn film, and buff dry with a second microfibre.

Can I use newspaper or tissue to clean the windshield?

Better not. Both leave lint and can smear the film around. Clean microfibre towels give a streak-free result.

Does recirculation mode cause fogging?

Yes. It keeps humid cabin air inside. Switch to fresh air when defogging, especially with passengers.

Do anti-fog sprays work?

They can reduce fogging for a while on clean glass. Clean the glass properly first, or the product just sits on the film.

Why does fog form on the outside of my windshield?

When the AC has cooled the glass and the outside air is warm and humid. Use the wipers and set the AC slightly warmer.

How often should I clean the inside of my windshield in winter?

Once a week during the fog season. Dashboard off-gassing and smog rebuild the film quickly.
