Rats in Your Car: Signs of Wiring Damage, Insurance and How to Keep Them Out

By Royal Royce Team

Quick answer: To keep rats out of your car, remove what draws them (food crumbs, warmth, a car left unused for days), block entry points with mesh, wrap exposed wiring in rodent-deterrent tape and clear garbage near your parking. Repellent sprays and ultrasonic gadgets help only briefly. If wiring is already chewed, stop driving, photograph the damage and call your insurer.

You come down to the parking on a Monday morning. The car starts, coughs, and throws a check-engine light. Or the headlights work on one side only. Or, worst, there’s a faint smell of petrol. Open the bonnet and you find shredded insulation foam, a few dark droppings, and a nest of chewed paper behind the battery.

Rat damage is one of the most common unplanned repair bills for city car owners in India, and it’s almost entirely preventable. Here’s what attracts rats, how to spot damage early, what your insurance will and won’t pay for, and what actually keeps them out.

Why rats get into cars in Indian cities

Rats chew because their front teeth never stop growing; gnawing keeps them short. They nest in engine bays because a car that’s just been driven stays warm for hours, and the space behind the battery or above the air filter is dark and sheltered.

You’ll often hear that soy-based wire insulation is the reason. The evidence doesn’t back it. A study commissioned by soy producers found mice chewed soy and non-soy plastics alike, and a US class action blaming wiring was dismissed for lack of proof, as TorqueNews reports. Rats also chew washer hoses, foam and plastic pipes. They’re opportunists, not gourmets.

What actually raises your risk is where and how the car is parked:

  • Delhi NCR: cars parked on colony lanes and near open drains or garbage points, often unused through long winter weekends or while families travel.

  • Mumbai: stilt parking next to nullahs, and the monsoon, when flooding pushes rats out of drains and into anything dry and warm.

  • Bangalore: apartment basements with garbage rooms close to the parking bays.

  • Hyderabad: open lots and new layouts near construction sites, where rats lose their old burrows.

The common thread: a car that sits still for three or more days near a food source is the one that gets chewed.

Signs a rat has been in your car

Check for these if the car has been parked a while or you’ve seen rats nearby:

  • Droppings on the engine cover, battery tray or in the boot

  • Chewed foam from the bonnet insulation pad

  • Nest material: paper, cloth, dry leaves or plastic shreds near the battery or air filter box

  • Electrical faults that appear overnight: dashboard warnings, one headlight out, wipers or horn dead

  • A burning or rotting smell from the AC vents, which can mean a nest, or a dead rat, in the air intake

  • Fuel smell, which means stop: a chewed fuel line is a fire risk

If you spot chewed wiring or smell fuel, don’t drive the car to the workshop. Get it towed or inspected where it stands.

Is rat bite damage covered by car insurance in India?

Often, but not automatically. A third-party policy never covers damage to your own car. Under a comprehensive policy, rodent damage may fall under own-damage cover, but many insurers treat it as excluded unless you’ve bought a rodent add-on. Bajaj General’s rodent cover page says standard comprehensive policies usually don’t cover it without the add-on.

Where it is covered, claims commonly get rejected for these reasons, according to PB Partners:

  • You reported the damage late

  • You repaired the car before the surveyor inspected it

  • You kept driving after warning signs and caused more damage

  • The insurer classed it as wear and tear or electrical breakdown

How to file a rat damage claim

  1. Don’t drive the car if wiring or hoses look chewed.

  2. Inform your insurer through its app, website or helpline the same day.

  3. Take clear photos and a short video of the damage, droppings and nest.

  4. Wait for the surveyor, or take the car to a network garage on a tow.

  5. Keep repair estimates and invoices. Note that a claim may affect your no-claim bonus.

When you renew, read the add-on list. A rodent cover add-on costs a small fraction of a single wiring harness replacement on a modern car.

What actually keeps rats out of your car

We’d rank these by how much difference they make.

1. Take away the reasons to visit

Food is the first. Biscuit crumbs, a dropped samosa, a kid’s juice box under the seat: rats smell them through the gaps around pedals and firewall grommets. A clean cabin is the cheapest rat repellent for a car there is. If yours has years of crumbs in the seat rails, an interior deep cleaning removes them in a few hours.

Then movement. Drive or at least start and move the car every two days if you can. Rats prefer a quiet, undisturbed nest.

2. Block the way in

Rats usually enter through the engine bay from below, or through the fresh-air intake at the base of the windscreen. A workshop can fit fine steel mesh over the air intake and close gaps in the underbody shields. Ask them to check the cabin air filter housing too.

3. Protect the wiring that’s exposed

Rodent-deterrent electrical tape, coated with capsaicin, is sold by several carmakers and parts suppliers. Wrapping the most exposed harnesses discourages chewing because it tastes hot. It’s a one-time job that a good electrician can do in an hour.

4. Fix the parking spot

Ask your society or RWA to move garbage bins away from parking, schedule pest control, and keep the parking lit. A brightly lit, clean basement has far fewer rats than a dark one with open bins.

What works only briefly

  • Repellent sprays and peppermint oil: they work for a few days, then the smell fades.

  • Ultrasonic devices: results are mixed, and rats often get used to the sound.

  • Naphthalene balls: please don’t put them in the cabin. They release fumes you then breathe in a closed car.

  • Leaving the bonnet open overnight: it can help a little by removing the dark, sheltered space, but it isn’t practical everywhere.

Cleaning up after rats safely

Rat droppings and urine can carry disease. Leptospirosis spreads through the urine of infected animals, including rats, and the risk often rises after floods, according to the US CDC. That matters in Mumbai and Bangalore basements after heavy rain.

Don’t sweep or vacuum dry droppings, because that throws particles into the air. The US CDC’s cleanup method is the safe one: wear rubber gloves, spray droppings and nest material with disinfectant until very wet, let it soak for five minutes, pick it up with paper towels, then disinfect the area again.

In a car, droppings end up under seats, in the boot well and sometimes in the AC intake. If you’d rather not do it yourself, our steam sanitisation interior clean treats every surface with high-temperature steam, and lingering smells are handled at the source, as we explain in why a car still smells after cleaning. Wiring repairs go to an electrician or your service centre first.

Our guide to car interior cleaning prices shows what a deep or steam clean typically costs.

Where rats hide in a car, and what they chew

Knowing the usual spots makes the monthly check quick, and helps you explain the problem to a mechanic or insurer.

Spot

Why rats like it

What gets damaged

Behind or beside the battery

Warm, enclosed, close to the ground

Battery cables, fuse box wiring, earth straps

On top of the air filter box

Sheltered, near the air intake

Air filter (stuffed with nest material), intake hoses

Under the bonnet insulation pad

Soft foam, ideal for nesting

The pad itself, then wiring clipped beneath it

Fresh-air intake below the windscreen

Leads straight into the cabin

Cabin filter, AC blower; causes bad smells in the cabin

Wheel arches and underbody

Easy entry from the ground

ABS and wheel-speed sensor wires, brake hoses

Inside the cabin

Food crumbs, seat foam for nests

Seat foam, carpets, wiring under the seats

The wheel-arch sensor wires deserve a special mention. When a rat chews an ABS sensor cable, the dashboard throws an ABS or traction warning, and many owners assume it’s an electronic fault. A quick look inside the arch with a torch often shows the bite marks.

The AC intake is the most unpleasant one to discover. A nest in the fresh-air intake fills the cabin with a sour, musty smell the moment the fan starts. Spraying freshener into the vents does nothing until the nest is removed and the intake and cabin filter cleaned.

When the risk peaks in Indian cities

  • Monsoon (June to September): flooded drains push rats into dry, raised spaces, and parked cars are exactly that. Mumbai and Bangalore basements see the most activity.

  • Festive travel (October and November): families leave cars parked for a week or more during Diwali and wedding travel, which gives rats undisturbed time to nest.

  • Winter in Delhi NCR: cold nights make a warm engine bay more attractive, and cars parked through long weekends are left alone for days.

If you’re travelling, ask a neighbour or the society guard to start the car and move it a few metres every two or three days. It sounds minor. It breaks the routine rats rely on.

Getting your society or RWA to help

One car owner can only do so much if the parking itself attracts rats. A short, specific message to the society committee works better than a complaint. Something like:

“Three cars in our basement had wiring chewed by rats in the last two months. Could we (1) move the garbage collection point away from the parking bays, (2) schedule monthly pest control for the basement and drains, and (3) fix the lights in the rear parking row? Rat damage repairs are costing owners thousands of rupees, and insurers don’t always pay.”

Numbers and a clear request get action. Ask other affected owners to sign it, and attach a photo or two of the damage if you have them.

In independent houses and colony parking in Delhi, the same applies to the space around your gate: no open garbage, no food scraps for street animals right next to the car, and the drain covers in place.

A quick monthly check that saves a big bill

Once a month, open the bonnet in daylight and spend one minute looking at three places: behind the battery, around the air filter box, and the insulation pad under the bonnet. Fresh droppings or shredded foam mean act now, before the wires go.

If you’re in Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore or Hyderabad, our teams can clean and sanitise a cabin after rat activity at your doorstep. Find yours: Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore or Hyderabad.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best rat repellent for a car?

No single product. Removing food from the cabin, moving the car regularly, meshing the air intake and wrapping exposed wiring in capsaicin-coated tape work better together than any spray or gadget.

Do ultrasonic rat repellents work in cars?

Results are mixed. Some owners see a short-term drop in activity, but rats often get used to the sound. Treat them as an extra, not your main defence.

Is rat bite damage covered under car insurance?

Not under third-party cover. Under comprehensive cover it depends on the insurer; many require a rodent add-on. Check your policy wording or call your insurer.

How do I know if a rat is living in my car?

Look for droppings, chewed foam under the bonnet, nest material near the battery or air filter, sudden electrical faults and a bad smell from the AC vents.

Can I drive my car after a rat chewed the wires?

No, if wiring, hoses or fuel lines are damaged. You risk further damage, a rejected claim and, with fuel lines, a fire. Get it inspected or towed.

Why do rats choose cars?

A recently driven car is warm, the engine bay is dark and sheltered, and food crumbs in the cabin add to the pull. Cars parked for days near drains or garbage are most at risk.

Do soy-based wires attract rats?

There’s no solid evidence. Studies found rodents chew soy and non-soy plastics alike. Rats chew because their teeth keep growing.

Are naphthalene balls safe to keep in a car?

Not in the cabin. They release fumes you’ll breathe in a closed car. Use mesh, tape and a clean interior instead.

How do I clean rat droppings from my car safely?

Wear gloves, spray droppings with disinfectant, wait five minutes, wipe with paper towels and disinfect again. Don’t vacuum or sweep dry droppings.

How do I get rid of the smell after a rat in my car?

Find and remove the source first, which may be a nest or a dead rat in the air intake. Then steam clean and sanitise the cabin; fragrance alone won’t fix it.
